What Bush did in Iraq was very bad! But he genuinely was trying to rebuild the country and make them a democracy. It failed horribly, but half of MAGA is borderline genocidal towards Muslims. That's worse! That's way worse!

On the contrary. I used to believe the standard leftist explanation: that it was all about oil. But then they didn't prioritize efforts to extract oil, and also a bunch of reporting came out from the white house making it sound more and more like the Neocons were true believers.
I'm not saying they weren't stupid, or hypocritical, or evil. They were certainly quick to excuse torture. But if you're looking for alternative motives, Bush wanting to look tough was the biggest one. The oil thing? Not a primary factor.
You're right that the BB riot was, in many ways, a prelude to January 6th. Consider two things: January 6th was a massive escalation, not a mere continuation. And Trump's foreign policy (in his second term) could likewise be a massive escalation of Bush's worst excesses.
I am not sure why you're making this argument to me -- I consider Trump to be uniquely and extremely dangerous, but the REASON HE EXISTS is because people like Will don't understand the damage that Bush did to the republic.
Okay, then I guess I don't disagree with you. But I've been arguing with some other people in other threads, who were saying in no uncertain language that Bush was worse than Trump is
Purely in terms of foreign policy in the Middle East? I'd give you that one... but that owes more to circumstances, and Trump having moderate generals, not Trump personally.
But Trump took unprecedented actions to try to rig a US election, and now he's letting a billionaire tear apart government programs to further a paranoid fascist movement
And those programs? Ending JUST USAID or PEPFAR will kill far more people than Bush did in Iraq and Afghanistan combined.
