it raises money to fund the costume preservation dept i believe since there's otherwise no funding to archive and upkeep historical/significant costuming and clothes
The one thing that makes me somewhat okay with it is that it's a fundraiser for The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, and lord knows non-profits need all the help they can get under the current regime.
The vibe still strikes me as rich, famous people peacocking in public, though.
