Anyone upset about minimum wage workers in 21 states getting a much-needed pay raise as of January 1 should consider this: if the minimum wage had kept pace with worker productivity gains since the 1960s, it would now exceed $20 per hour.

Been more than that in Australia for ages and workers here have good holiday leave, sick leave, maternity leave and long service leave. The US needs to have strong trade unions to fight for workers' rights.
Yeah saw that other day and I'm like their housing is cheaper yet USA ppl would say AU higher. It's cheaper in AU and you get healthcare. Gotta fact find for yourself and see the truth, gov will never tell you what it really is
Ohio passed a $10.70 per hour after jan 1st 2025 for employers that make $394,000 dollars a year, pretty sure that's 7 bucks an hour for most of up, and we are still living under the poverty line either way, god bless America
And that would put upward pressure on everyone's paycheck. After all, why continue doing that toxic office job when you work literally anywhere else and still keep the lights on at home?
But what would poor white Republicans complain about then if you take that away? The rich wouldn't be able to control them as easy and that wouldn't be good now would it?
Part 2- It seems like the answer is taxing the wealthy and making things more affordable. Minimum wage goes up. Corporations charge more for goods. The workers that are just above minimum wage don't get a raise but also have to pay more for goods. What am I missing?
Part 1- Mr. Reich- I am a big fan of the energy that you put into sharing information. I really struggle with the minimum wage issue. We are a small non-profit that relies on funding from the state and the funding does not increase to allow us to offer other staff proportional raises. Big problem.
Sadly my jump in pay is only 35 cents. It equates to an extra $50 a month then taxes are taken out. While I am thankful, $14.70 an hour is not a great wage
Anyone who is upset about a minimum wage increase should seek professional help, because no reasonable human being could oppose it!! Someone incapable of empathy might oppose it, because they're a friggin psycho/sociopath. No sane person, to be sure.
As long as you keep it at the state level, I’m fine with it. Let Washington destroy itself. But if you’re talking about a national minimum wage forget about it.
Which is pretty strange considering so many of them ARE poor and live in red states that depend on tax money from blue states to survive. The people who complain most about the left are the ones who are literally supported by the left AND actually still think they're morally superior...smh
prices are about to go up there
there never was inflation it was just a price re-adjustment by corps after many states raised their minimum wages.
they don't want you to get ahead they just want you to survive, if you got ahead you wouldn't have to put up with the bullshit and they lose their power.
The Republicans voted down HR 582, which would have raised the minimum wage to $15 over 6 years. They did, however, vote to cut taxes for corporations and the wealthy under Trump, bill HR 1, which has added $2 trillion to the national debt.
GA's state minimum is $5.15. There are companies that will do anything they can to not default to the oh-so-generous Fed wage of $7.25. It's beyond cruel, and not realistically survivable, in either scenario. But yes, let's keep giving the power to the 1%ers that don't give a shit about others.
It’s the red states. Why don’t you ever actually NAME the source of the problem being republicans, instead of insinuating it’s democrats that are responsible for things Republicans do?
7 25 in Indiana.
It never changes.
Stupid Hoosiers keep Republicans in office, so apparently, they enjoy the struggle.
Gives them something to blame Dems for.
It's never their own fault.
My best investment as a small business owner are my employees. Every year, what I pay them will go up. It's no different than the increase in just about every other expense that a business has (COGS, rent, utilities, etc.).
My state has raised the minimum wage to $16.25, fast food workers get more. That’s our STATE wage, whereas most if not all cities/counties already exceed the wage. Of course we live in one of the highest cost of living states, so exceeding other states isn’t saying much. 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
Isn't it amazing how so many of our present day "problems" have 20/20 insight solutions? We get too soon old and too late smart! If at first you don't succeed, try, try again! 👀
Servers and bartenders minimum wage for their hourly rate is still less than the federal minimum wage. Where I live it’s $4.86 an hr and is even lower in other red states.
Those people should def be tipped. If your state/city has raised wages for them equal to or beyond the min. wage, tipping should go away, I think its overdue. No one's means of living should depend on if grandma thought you deserve 15+% or $1 depending on how many glasses of tea you brought.
Why care if others make much more? Bartenders and servers offer convenience and serve you. If you want luxury, it costs. Also, you could lower tipping. 8-12% vs 18-25%
No one cares if they make more, but, tipping was implemented to deal with the fact that they were paid a lot less. If that's no longer true, then tipping should go away except under exceptional cirumstances.
I would tip to show appreciation for serving me as I sit on my ass and not do anything other than eat. Ofc tipping could be lowered since it wouldn't be required to survive.
Certainly you could, but the idea of no tipping is not about cheating a person who's working a hard job, and more about having them paid fairly to begin with (at least to me).
Not sure where ur I’m in Sydney Australia.
I don’t know a single person/couple who can GET A MORTGAGE if no property to leverage against or a loan from mum & dad.
They can’t even scrape $ together for a deposit starting from scratch.
My 1st mortgage bank said why ru only buying 1? (40 yrs ago)
1978: 'Til the union was busted, I made $8 an hr + (very small) commission working in the book dept, Macy's Union Square. $1 copay, full health coverage. Double time on Sunday. Took vacations. Had savings. Able to eventually work and go back to college in my 30's. Livable wage we took for granted.
I wanted to let you know I signed all your petitions you sent me through email and text. I also signed the petition for the 14th amendment and want to send you the March information if you want to share💙
It has everything to do with issue framing and marginalization of working class groups by separating and stratifying them using the Southern Strategy (racism)
Back in the 60s my dad was making minimum wage driving charter bus & trying to raise a family of 5 on less than $300 a month. Of course, at the time a cup of coffee cost less that .50 cents.
Now make it personal and relatable. If you are making a $12 minimum wage, $8 are being picked out of your pocket each and every hour you work. That how the economy has been restructured since 1965. -RR, you can correct the details. One could also specifically do autoworkers, etc
Anyone who thinks minimum wage workers don’t deserve their pay is an asshole. It is my observation that as ones’ compensation rises, their productivity falls.
Which, after taxes is $38k per year. Rent, utilities, phone, internet, car payment, car insurance and gas come to at least $15k a year. That leaves about $23k for everything else. Unless you eat Raman every day, half will be food. One med sit and you are broke with a typical 10k deductible.
according to articles i read, it would be somewhere in the vicinity of $24 per hour. and all states should be paying their workers at least $15 per hour INCLUDING waitstaff.
Amen. Also, don't believe the giant corporations when they blame their price increases on a higher minimum wage. There's plenty of revenue to support higher wages and ridiculous exec salaries and share holder benefits. Trouble is, the rich want to keep all the money.
Seattle went overboard. It destroys too many small businesses who can’t afford to pay over $20 an hour. You could say they don’t deserve to stay open if they can’t afford it. But then what do politicians understand about economics? Nothing.
If it had kept pace with INFLATION alone since the 1960's it would be around that range. Add productivity, and it's clear why the super rich rail against minimum wage. Their dragon hordes come from somewhere.
Opposite of what I'm saying. Living Wage is what voters have wanted. Min wage has stayed the same for so long. My main message to Dem Party is Living Wages and MedicareForAll.
Just focus on those two - no more excuses. Corp Dems have stood in the way. New leaders needed and fast
The president of the United States appoints the NLRB. You can either have strong unions in this country, or a republican president. You can’t have both.
Montana goes up to a whopping $10.55!! My state of Virginia goes to 12.41. Those wages are a joke and do nothing to help workers when corporations continue to gouge prices. There needs to be a national minimum wage of at least $15. People need to live not just survive.

If I were still able to work, I'd be making over $105/hr. Not counting shift, holiday & overtime differentials.
As an RN. In Silicon Valley. At a unionized hospital.

Divide the cost of a burger now by the cost then and multiply by $1.25 and you'll get a similar if not larger number
Won’t bore you with lower full-time etc rate as it allows for mandatory 4-week paid holidays etc.
Even so, very few people here can afford housing purchase without bank
of mom & dad. Basic (good) medical is free.

a low wage economy is a poor economy.
Each state has its own..everything.
Why can't we be united?
If a job isn't worth paying a living wage,
maybe it is a job that is not worth doing.
Ok then
Jokes over

Trumpmusk want to bust the few unions left. As Union wages go, so goes nonunion.
He's worse than any Republican.
The richest states are blue states and they all voted for Harris. The poorest states are red states and they all voted for trump.
