I keep seeing people talking about AI and crypto stuff as if they were equivalently real, useful things and I am not sure which thing they are fundamentally failing to understand but it's one of them.

Same hype machine, same lack of understanding in media. Unsurprising that it gets the same result.
TBF, I feel like It might be generous towards AI to say 98% of the hype is as overblown as crypto. And if 98% of what people are exposed to is either bad or useless, people calling it bad sounds fair.
"crypto" is a pretty broad term and "AI" is a very vague term. But you could argue that crypto is using cryptography but AI is not "intelligent". IMO the real metric should be hype to utility ratio - one that blockchain tech is clearly winning on.
The same people who were generating empty hype about crypto have now left crypto behind and are generating empty hype about AI. To them it's all the same, they're in business of selling magic
I think this is a good way to put it. I’ve made the crypto and AI comparison myself to describe specifically the level of hype and mania. But there is definitely a clear difference in how much value each tech provides. For better or worse.
idk objectively, but with LLMs having non-zero utility the hype _feels_ higher.
eg, no one tried to restructure my entire company around crypto, managers didn't flood slack with galaxy brain crypto takes on the regular (devs will soon have 100x productivity with LLMs, how will product keep up!?)
AI hype is massive and visible in every area of tech. People are adopting it everywhere. Blockchain hype hit the wall quite early and hype turned out to be fake/manufactured

They both play FUD like a fiddle though
