When I say that Garneau was gracious and made time for me, way back in the days when the Liberals were in third-party status, I screwed up my courage at a Press Gallery Dinner one year, and asked him if he read sci-fi, and when he said he did, asked if he would read my novel manuscript. He said yes.

Said novel is military SF. And so I printed out a fresh hard copy and gave it to him after QP one day, and a few weeks later, he invited me to his office to talk about it. He was generous in his comments (No, that's not what happens to bodies when exposed to vacuum), and it was valuable.

Said novel did not sell, but he did ask after it a couple of times, and I started doing rewrites because it became clear I was a better writer at that point than when I originally wrote it (I had already written a sequel by that point as well), but still, the thought Garneau liked it kept me going.

But then I got busy with my non-fiction book, and my journalism was taking more and more of my time, but every now and again, I still think about going back to those rewrites, because of Garneau's encouragement.
So that's what I'm thinking about tonight with news of his passing.
