As a Newfoundlander, shut up. We don't have to fake our myriad of accents, we don't need language coaches just to speak the way we do. Those of us who've had our accents watered down from international media being a bigger part of our lives don't run to pretend we didn't lose it unlike the royals.
I am quite aware of the myriad of Newfoundland accents having lived in the province for 8 yrs. I simply didn’t care for the way her comment came across.
Would you feel the same should someone insult your dialect?
"more pressing issues" why is it literally everyone who says that never actually seems to care about addressing those issues? It's always just an excuse to ignore something of slightly less importance (say our sovereignty and democracy)
And let me be clear when I say sovereignty I'm talking about how we still aren't truly sovereign since the british royal family still is our head of state.
Oh they say the same thing about our accent. Everytime I go to the UK to research a midieval manyscript, the folk at the library/archive look at me and ask me tob repeat 2 or 3 times before what I am saying sinks in.
Received Pronunciation, don't you know. Trained from birth. Elocution lessons. No British Royal is going to be allowed to speak in any native accent, no SIR!
What an ignorant thing to say. I'm sure they think your accent, and yes, you do have one. it sounds just as strange. Learn to love the differences this world has to offer
What’s your point? I like the Royal British accent - reminds me of the good ol’ days when people enunciated. When I was in Nashville, I was told repeatedly by the locals that they loved my Canadian accent. 😝 🤷♀️
I watch a lot of Britbox, so I'm quite used to British accents and quite like them, actually. His accent sounds like the usual public school, posh accent. Each to his or her own. It's certainly easier on the ears than some southern USA or Texan accents.
The royals need to be mocked. The only thing that gives them claim to their entitlement is their bloodline and that bloodline is chocked full of some of the worst villains in history.
How else will they recognize others who are superior in the ridiculous British class system. These accents help the upper class twits know to snub their nose at
My London cockney accent is funny and weird, as are accents of Scots and welsh, and Newfoundlanders, and various Canadians. Our accents are unique. Just because people speak differently doesn’t define us. I’m sure your accent would sound funny and weird. So your point is???
Well there’s where you are wrong! I know plenty of rich folk who have accents just like mine, aristocratic families don’t all speak with posh accents and some are as lower/middle class as myself and do have a posh accent. Again accent doesn’t define who we are! Just where we grew up.
Seriously why does the English language and English accents especially the “royal English” irritate you?
Why does it matter so bloody much how people speak? As long as I understand what is being said, I don’t really care about the accent, or how much money they have. More about kindness, empathy.
What are you talking about? English accents dont annoy me. I have English friends, Irish friends, French friends. I don't care about accents. I care about putting on a show to brag about how elite you are.
Muted bc this is going nowhere. Stop being so thin-skinned and get over yourself.
Like I said, it depends on where you grow up! If you are raised in a cockney household you speak the same way, if you are raised in an elite household you speak the same as everyone else.
What I don’t understand is why does it offend you?
My college roommate dated an upper class British person. They came out to my Appalachian boonies to visit and we lunched at The Country CaFaye.
I had to translate for both the lovely Brit and our server. Neither had a clue what the other was saying. The Brit's vegan gut was equally confused after.
AKA The Kings English, RP, the aristocratic accent, at the other end of the scale is my original accent which is black country English known as Yam Yam. Most English speakers need subtitles to understand a thick yam yam accent.

and it's not an artificially reinforced manner of speaking to differentiate themselves as members of the highest level of a social class, so yeah
There are much more pressing issues going on in the world today that should have our attention.
But then I love all British accents
When Charles dies
Even the name of the dialect somehow sounds posh and out of touch
Good grief
Seems like a sneer must be frozen on the face in order to emulate it
the british royals sound and talk ugly as shit
and should all be forced to get elocution lessons to sound like shane macgowan
I have a really obvious accent. I can't help it. You can't help it.
They can. They're doing it to be elite.

The "eh" thing though, let's be honest, we say it.
