Usually Blood Oxygenation Level Dependent (BOLD) data acquired through fMRI is slow and sluggish. To determine if a brain region is involved in a given cognitive task, careful task design and methods are required.

The gold standard of the field has been General Linear Model (GLM) which allows to find strong, reliable activations but it is limited by model assumptions such as linear behavior of the brain. But the brain is highly non-linear especially in higher order brain regions.
This is where our method TSA comes into the picture, it is a model free analysis technique that allows cognitive scientists to find robust and nonlinear brain activations across a whole range of cognitive tasks thus opening up the avenues for more naturalistic task designs.
Like in this analysis of the Pieman audio dataset, specific interesting scenes in the movie elicited strong responses across individuals, which TSA nicely captures nicely.
