Why??? .. It celebrates victory against tyrants, which we need now more than ever.. the US gave weapons to Mexico to fight against the French and Mexico eventually won. It kept the land between our countries safe.. and is a day of Solidarity that shows what can be done when we fight together. πΊπΈππ²π½π
In Mexico it is not celebrated. It is commemorated and taken with the respect it deserves for sure. But it's not celebrated. The issue is in the USA it has been used for capitalist gain. If it was about respect and commemoration, most would know what it actually stands for. The vast majority do not.
I know many people don't understand the meaning or history of the holiday.. I end up talking about it every year to people who aren't aware.. but it's still a day of Solidarity and celebration, right? It's taken on it's own meaning in the US.. can it be used for good? To bring awareness and unity?
Ok.. I grew up celebrating it and it's always been a fun day. I'm ashamed of the deportations, immigrants have been nothing but good for this country and have worked in awful conditions while being scapegoats. I want to stop what's happening too. My intentions were to show support and pride. πΊπΈππ²π½
Yes. I grew up in a border state. I've celebrated it my whole life.
Every holiday is corporate here, but people keep the meaning true for themselves. It's a day of Solidarity for me. I've tried to open minds about it and use it for good. I don't insist anything. I wanted to understand. It's sad.
All Cinco de Mayo is, is a marketing ploy here to sell Mexican beer& liquor, food and party supplies. It was never touted as some big revolutionary victory or an actual military battle that mattered. Just capitalist bullshit in a country that only gives a fuck about profit.
To me it is a celebration of Mexico fighting the French so well that it allowed the Union to defeat the confederates so that America can be here today to continue fighting the confederate that are in power now.
My style is to say "Fuck Your Cinco de Mayo" though I will confess I did have a fun time at the celebration in Salem, OR way back. The Mexican bakeries knew me from the No to NAFTA protest I organized, and made sure I was well fed in the morning. oh the LOL #Solidarity
Anthony Bourdain wrote this Under The Volcano essay for us. Sharing today, as I do every year. I celebrate Bourdain Day on June 25 because he fought for us in that #GoodTrouble essay. #Migente #Luchador #ChefLove #Bourdain #Cooks #Familia #CincoDeMayo

Pic below, Bourdain Under the Volcano essay on my t-shirt. I'm asking everyone to consider reading Marie Arana's book LatinoLand: A Portrait of America's Largest and Least Understood Minority. #Familia #BourdainDay #June25 #KidsofImmigrants #LatinoLand #Cooks #LibroBueno #MarieArana #History #UFW
Cinco de Mayo is a microcosm of what happens cuando una victoria anti-imperialista gets reduced to imperialist marketing. A holiday born from resistencia y soberanΓa, hollowed out y rebrandeado as cerveza promos, tequila shots, y fiestas sin contexto. Β‘Que lo goces... pero sepas lo que gozas! ;)

Just respect the sentiment.
You insist on this capitalist holiday.

Yet, they want to throw on sombreros and get drunk on a Mexican holiday, that Mexico doesn't even celebrate.
F them.
