well most of the time when i save an image it's to use in clip studio paint or another animation/art software, those dont tend to enjoy webp's. same with gifs, gifs sometimes just save as webp's and those are just more annoying to deal with
"real gifs" are unfortunately very limited (256 colors, 1 bit transparency, terrible compression ratio...), that's why most platforms actually use animated webp or mp4 under the hood!
yeah webp's are good for compression on the internet but that's not really what i use images for- i get why a website would use it but personally i just need to convert it every time i download one
I have 0 programs that can open a webp. I'm convinced that any websites who use them exclusively are doing so to prevent their images from being edited

so far i only know that Paint.NET and VEGAS Pro support webp but i dont use either very often
iirc its the main reason jxl didnt take off
1. JXL's primarily competitor is AVIF, not WebP. WebP is a previous generation format
2. Google pushed against JXL probably not because "it's not their own format". In fact, JXL was co-developed with Google in some part
I hope when JXL matures it will be accepted by the Chromium team

Its adoption is just rising in recent years, your programs not having the ability to open webp is on them not webp.
