I have a temporary solution until I decide final plan, which depends on 1) whether HOV sticker program for EVs gets extension (all now expire 9/2025, but our Governor signed a law extending program until at least 2027, but it also requires Congress to pass a law to extend), and 2) tariff situation.

I have a 32.5mi commute each way to UCSF and cross the Bay Bridge, so I’m very keen on maintaining access to the HOV lane. If the program gets extended, I’ll continue leasing EVs (probably Lucid), but if no extension then I’ll buy my next EV (something else that I’ll enjoy keeping for 8+yrs).

Probably Lucid if I lease vs most likely a {non-American EV} if I buy. As per response to @drchrishourigan.bsky.social above, there are a few variables at play. For now, I have a temporary solution that burns dinosaurs (but still has an HOV sticker good for 5 months because it’s a plug-in hybrid).

Our first EV was a 2019 Tesla 3, still going strong. I inherited it from my wife when she got a Lucid Air Pure. OMG, is that a nice car.

I’d sell the Tesla but the dealer offered the change in his pocket and a stick of gum. Figured I’d hold on to it at that valuation.

Yeah, I bought my first S (P90D), but ended up needing to replace the car q3yrs to get a new HOV sticker in California, so I’ve leased the last two (an S 100D and most recently a MYP — it was nice having a trailer hitch for a bike rack). I agree that selling makes things more complicated.

I have friends who absolutely love their Rivians (and they were former Tesla drivers), but I’m not interested in an SUV or pickup for my commuter. Rivian needs to hurry up and make a sedan (and/or sports car) pronto.

We test drove the an R1S and loved it, but at the time they didn’t have a lease so we went with the Lucid, which had a phenomenal lease
