my favorite villains are drama queens. they project. they panic. they get attached to other people too fast and too loudly. they throw temper tantrums. they play stupid social games and win stupid prizes. they talk a big game abt the big picture but absolutely embarrass themselves for attention.

I feel like there's definitely a place for the "smarmy planner who's always in control" villain, but part of that is also giving them something that DOES cause them to panic and freak out.

Whedon can fuck off forever ofc, but the Operative panicking in Serenity always sticks with me, for example.

Yeah definitely! RF was in fact a smarmy planner who projected an image of control -- at least in parts. He also crucified people for drug use instead of paying attention to him and cannot figure out how to get a car in a post-apoc world without blackmailing someone

Matthew McConaughey's portrayal of Flagg/The Man in Black in the complicatedly bad Dark Tower from a few years back is good for this reason. He is supremely confident in his actions and goals but when things fuck them up he has a little meltdown and he gets all sorts of weird, it's great.

Give me a villain the weeps and screams at the loss of their champion, give me a villain who as the heroes approach is swearing vengeance unending and means it with all the anger of their wounded soul.

Make the villain willing to do something *unwise* or gasp and alarm, *illogical and not optimal*.

One of my favorite types of villains is the Affably Evil Totalitarian. Yeah they're absolute monsters but they can also hold a conversation and they have people and stuff they care about and try to make life nice for, and God help you if you touch Their People or Their Stuff.
