So, trying to compare this to something I am directly familiar with is going to be a challenge to connect this to you but, here goes. I'll gamble.
When I went for Graphic Design back in '02, I remember seeing something scrawled into the wall of the "study hall" where our professor held class ...
It said, "You're not a graphic designer. You're a goddamn paper jeweler!"
And by god, it held the same sting as this image macro!
That feeling you get when you realize that all the theory, study and application you expect to be doing for the job gets shoved aside by the "doing" of the job ...
I "get the ick" when I see this because I have have poured my life into the fundamentals of graphic design. Crammed my nose into books on art history, theory and the craft of my profession - but I cut so much goddamn paper that I might as well have been making rings to fit fingers!
Posts like this make me think: βDo I even want to be an author? Or do I just want to stay in my niche corner of the internet writing my silly little stories for fun?β
Have you published what you have written in your niche corner? If the answer is "yes" ... then you are an author aren't you? If the answer is "no" then maybe publish and become one. "Simples".
Pretty much what I was saying ... and very honest of you. I can say nothing about how many "dimes" you may or may not make ... but if you want to be an "author", and you see that as someone who has a published book, then why not simply self-publish whatever book you have written?
I havenβt written a book yet. I HAVE, however, written many short stories that I post on the internet!! When I do write a novel, however, I will probably do self publishing or indie publishing!
Good for you. I wish you well. It is a good feeling when you see your book out there and know one or two people have read it ... even if it doesn't make you loads of money! :)

That's right up there with, "If the job even breathes the word 'sales' then all the job is about is sales."

"Isn't that your job??"
That one really stings.

*jaw unhinges*
*unintelligible 56k modem screeching pours out*
