Got to move the story forward. I donβt think you should watch TV from the UK or EU as they kill off characters that would appear to be central to the series.
And that is why American movies and TV outcompete them on the int'l market. I say that as a serious Nordic noir and Brit TV guy. Only weirdos like me appreciate the futility and pathos of those movies/shows. Everyone else wants to escape to a land where Good triumphs over Evil and love wins.
Reading isn't easy. It's nowhere near as difficult as writing, but it's still an effort and investment. So don't kill off your characters unless you have a damned good reason to do so. I mean, so damned good your story falls apart unless you do so. Or expect your readers to leave you.
Sometimes it even works backwards: the character dies in the first scene, his or her friends and family start to tell the police officer about the deceased aaand... I realise that he or she was the best character in the whole story. π
