I genuinely think we can get there. One day. But the move fast and break things ethos is not a goer here (and I am fully cogniscant of how fast things moved and how much got broken in the early Space Age).

I now see the Apollo program was a stunt, basically, although I still believe it was worth doing, even with the luxury of hindsight. But one of the big lessons we all ought to have learned is that it is enormously expensive and complicated to keep humans alive anywhere off Earth. /1

In my dreams, we'd have a long, ongoing program to study and solve the myriad problems associated with keeping people alive for the long term, in space and/or on Mars. I do think it's worth having colonization of the Moon and Mars as a goal.
