I don't think you can get the subtle jab in English that is implicit in French right-wing rhetoric whenever they say "gauchisme"

although "liberal" kinda *does* have that same sort of dig

"Islamist" does mean "entity that supports Islamic theocracy" to some extent, come to think of it

No, I agree, because AIUI l'islamisme is really about French right-wing pejorative associations of Islam with French leftism, while "Islamist" here in the US is usually used to describe groups elsewhere in the world, e.g. Taliban, and while it's definitely pejorative, the nuance is different.

I was throwing it out there as something that might give some hints about trying to translate it.

The US press translates it as Islamo-leftism, but it doesn't really capture the implicit xenophobic fearmongering. "Cultural Marxism" is analogous as a dogwhistle but that's the closest I can think of.

Islamogauchisme is much more a dog whistle than anything else.
And it isn't really targeting muslims but more leftists.

And i think there's a bit of madness with left-muslim alliances.
