Jails release you in the clothes you came in. So if you came in the summer and are released in the dead of winter at 6am, good luck. Because parole exists for people who have prison there is an assumption that someone must be tracking or caring for jail leavers, but that's not the case.

Rikers has a special bus line for sure; most urban jails have at least a near by bus (dc has a metro stop even!) this just is just insanely remote.

Looks like there’s a large, unnecessarily sprawled-out complex of correctional facilities there that could’ve been planned and coordinated together, if anybody cared about that sort of thing. I mean leaving aside this specific issue, they’re just occupying a massive amount of land for no good reason

I think these super short sentences are quite uncommon in most of the world anyway? Most countries don't jail people for short period of times and then they give you some support before release usually (or at least connect with charities for it).

Well in France they can keep you in "garde à vue" without charging you of anything for up to 3 days. I wonder how what they do when they release you.

But tbc that wouldn't be in a prison, rather a cell in a police station.

It depends on the area of the country. It looks like Santa Fe moved all their detention to the out of area facility. Normally if they are going to be out in a few days or bailed out, in LA County at least, they are booked locally and held locally. At the worst it's the Inmate Reception Center next to Union Station.

This is kind of crazy, drivers hate walking on the roads but there is nothing inherently unsafe about it, I do it all the time on the local roads here, often local tourist trails are marked on those anyway. Sure, night and snow doesn't help, but still, the driver had to be absolutely reckless.

I drive that road a lot, it’s pitch black at night until you get to Santa Fe. Combined with the driving culture here — ton of drunk driving and just bad driving generally — you get a problem. New Mexico has the highest pedestrian fatality rate in the U.S., it’s not just these guys unfortunately.
