You would have had to very actively regulate or shut down Fox, Sinclair Broadcast Group, Facebook, Twitter (ish), Newsmax, OANN etc. and still somehow live with all the websites, AM Radio and podcasts that "informed" the right-wing echo chamber. Would have been bold for the Dems to take this action.

Yep, it’s a pretty amazing “feature” of the constitution that you can’t prevent harmful, hateful or deceitful speech until an authoritarian takes control and then decides academics, students, protesters and opposing politicians should go to jail for speech he disagrees with.

I’ll be honest, as a Canadian (with German heritage), I’m ok with a touch more regulation on speech than Americans. Having said that, I have no idea in your system how anyone could have controlled all those outlets from poisoning the well.

People think you’ve lost it by raising this stuff (and it’s not just a joke, they do) because we’re conditioned to react that I think, and it’s in that person’s interests to dismiss the messenger because it’s too difficult or jarring.

Similar to how anything outside a very narrow range of acceptable ideas are ridiculed by those desperate to be seen as moderate, sensible etc. It’s a mental defence mechanism as much as anything else from the pain of being wrong, how bad things are, whatever.

What's worse is that if the Republican voter tells you why they vote Republican it sounds crazy to the average person, but they've created a worldview where enough believe that is true
