Personally I'd just carve off one of the existing lanes. If they want more car lanes, let 'em figure it out.

There was a proposal to do that early in the pandemic when car traffic on the bridge was very low. But there was no way to get from the end of east span path at Yerba Buena to the south side of the west span upper deck, which was the only access route to SF w/o crossing on/off ramps.

The only way to do it would be to convert the south side westbound breakdown lane all the way back at the toll plaza, then bike in the middle of the east span to YBI, through the tunnel to the west span, the along the off-ramp to Fremont St.

And even then the 2-way path would be a substandard 9 feet wide & not ADA compliant. IMO if a bridge lane is converted I’d like to see a bus lane added first. Raising 1/2 billion for a separated bike/walk trail is more politically feasible than a lane conversion, sadly.

A fantastic piece I read while researching the history of transit to the parks discussed the positive, almost transformative impact that people being forced to try BART alternatives had on AC Transit – I'm sure a bridge path would equally impress/stick as a choice!

The commuter argument is plausible (with e-bikes) but the potential for tourism is huge. The views are incredible and it’s easier to get to than the GG Bridge.

In addition to the options BART mentioned, folks can also bike from Oakland across the Bay Bridge east span path to Yerba Buena/Treasure Island, then take the short hop ferry or Muni Line 25 bus. But bike capacity on these is very limited. A full pathway is needed.

I will sign this anyway but could you please ask Bike East Bay to not do mandatory opt-in for petitions, this is bad privacy practices to force people to share their information for more purposes than what they want

Understood but for the system we're using, we found there was no way to have an optional sign up option that communicated the preference w our database correctly. We originally had a check box then realized it was signing people up either way. As such we added the disclaimer to at least be up front.
