On a recent Gardener’s World, Monty Don placed some thorny rosebush cuttings across the tops of newly planted pots until the seeds sprouted and became somewhat established.

Monty must have demure country squirrels—city squirrels could care less. Have tried rose cutting trick, huge gooseberry thorns, pepper flakes, rocks, stabby plastic forks…they laugh at me. I am endlessly unearthing pristine peanuts someone buys for them & battled 10 Black Walnut seedlings so far. 🥴

lol. I’ve tried putting old plastic fencing on the ground and securing it with wire “staples” until the plants are up. But I haven’t tried it in pots.

My beds are too dense for that so I have to patrol for days after I plant new things to try to rebury anything before it dries out. Also will occasionally dump out extra soil from winter sowing jugs nearby new seedlings so they dig in the wrong spot. Disturbed soil seems to really trigger them. 🤦‍♀️

I was thinking of open vegetable garden areas. In tight areas we put little round cages around the plants and secure them with bamboo stakes. You’ve probably tried that. Aggravating.

i like to stick dollar store pin wheels in the ground around my beds to try and deter them, also statue figurines moved around different places, seems to help some.
