Yup. "No one is checking." I've been a journalist for a number of years. When I started, we had research/fact checking departments at newspapers. That was one of the first things to go.

Old fashioned system but it worked everytime.

(To be fair, it looks like he had a long-term, stable job in publishing until 2015 -- and this is just me guessing, but it seems likely that the collapse of conventional publishing pushed him into precarity. I would read this as a consequence of deprofessionalization in journalism at large.)

I can absolutely understand precarity but I don't like the lying about checking. Other precarious writers who either write originally or who do check get harmed by lies like that, imo
