Will this legislation also remove the requirement that the USPS be self-sustaining on their own revenue, rather than receiving congressional appropriations? Because you can't have one without the other.

Exactly. The USPS is not a company, they are a government service. They cost money. Their entire purpose is to guarantee service to unprofitable rural areas. If they’re closing down it’s because of a lack of funds.

This is a priority! I've lived in rural areas like Colfax County. Can't imagine how devastating it would be to lose their post office.

Also...the discussion of putting banking services inside USPS post offices would help everybody, including rural and poor people, should be revived!

Sounds like a public good that shouldn't be profit driven. That way there is no pressure to do things like closing rural unprofitable offices. The objective is a universal service not to profit like it's a stock.

Also, there are things they could do to make themselves even more relevant. Idea has been floated to make the post office into a local bank branch, in under/unserved communities. They’re already the best service provider, but nobody knows about it because there’s been a lot of bad press. Fix that.

When our rural PO closed, foot traffic to the general store that housed it (and had operated continuously since 1841) basically crashed. Store closed a year later. It was the only one in 300 square miles and only employer in the village. Regional mail processing was then 60 miles away. Now, 120. 🙄
