"evaluate your coworkers on these ten different criteria in a way that can meaningfully affect their careers" how about I stab my eyes out with a rusty fork instead

Subjective evaluations for known criteria instead of target based evals is lazy assed
It actually takes them more time & effort as an HR team to fix the issues caused by subjective evals then it would be to create & roll out an objective target based system
My old company had forced ranking where we HAD to rate some people as not meeting standards and sr mgt would override if we didn't. It was a nightmare. I had to fight like hell for my team to get treated right.
I was at a company that was implementing that, plus all kinds of nonsensical goal setting to support it, and while it was far from the only reason I quit my entire corporate legal career, it sure didn’t help
Right? And we dealt with anyone who did not meet standards so everyone was at least coached up to a 3 or moved on, as was my job! It was so ridiculous!
From my work I have one where I have to "enter the marks" (a multi step process) for a class of ~45 individual students and then send the students a bespoke email summarizing their course marks. This takes about 5 minutes a student. So simple math would suggest this would take more than 0 hours.

Fools 🤨🤨🤦
"The average is a 3, so you must have people both above and below that threshold. There is no way that your team all performed above a 3."
Bitch, my team surpassed every goal the company set. Eat shit, boss-man. (not directed at you.)
They quite literally cannot pay me enough to do it.
