this is a big reason there’s so much frustration with the Democratic Party - because at this point the Dem coalition is “literally anyone who wants government to solve a problem of any kind”
no matter how much you disagree with other people on how, they are your only path to getting anything done

You care about policy?
Congrats, you're a Democrat.
Yes, we all hate this too.

Which is why it is stupid in the extreme to tell these tribes that the thing unifying them is not that bad really Liz Cheney is a hero.
There's a *lot* of pundit-y and academic and "elite" folks who deeply want to just be normal Republicans.
But they have to be Democrats. Because only Democrats actually *do* policy.
We are all collectively miserable about that fact.
We got into MAGA apocalypse because of our political illiteracy.
I think that’s what needs to change.
One party fights over their platform, their goals, the minutia of planning every last bit of a hypothetical out.
The other literally recycled their old platform and slapped a "we believe in dear leader" sticker on it.
And then there's the DNC which has 0 consistency in applied messaging besides "Give us your money"
This shit is hard.
I'm not pardoning the DNC or Democratic "Leadership" (Lord knows I've my issues with them), but it's a fundamentally asymmetric contest.
Also, dated perceptions from electeds.
It's analogous to dealing with fire-eaters. They're just evil, have evil supporters, and cannot be negotiated with. But most people have to learn the lesson the hard way before admitting the Free Soilers were right.
Anyone else, it's a patchwork of everyone whose only commonality is that don't share that view of who to blame.
Cue years of inactivity
fixed it for you.
does the American political system allow for a viable third party that does not function as a spoiler? structurally, no (thanks FPTP)
the system: it’s not great
That's the issue they Americans have.
Now, imagine that England send voters proportionally, but Scotland was all-or-nothing.
But also the Dems aren't really the party of getting things done (for the last 10 years at least).
Now they're the party of just being the lesser of two evils.
And that is what makes them so goddamned frustrating as they are not exactly good at it.
Turns out when the conservatives decide to follow the fascism-lite playbook, the status quo loving freaks get up on a stupid high horse.
It sucks, but it’s the way it is.
They are the best option we have *and* they suck.
