I think for it to happen with the World Cup it will have to be a full-on revolution, like giving Gianni the boot. I think there’s more and more appetite for it.
Iran is the one country I know of that has a travel ban and has qualified, so far.
ICE will just raid the locker rooms at halftime and deport their top scorers because how can daring to score against the USA making the USA great? And God says we should anyway!
Imagine if a MAGA athlete has a chance, but they have a Chinese rival favored to win and "oops" the visa didn't get approved. There isn't anything about that hypothetical that is worse than what they are already doing.
. . . or citizens who travel to see their country play. The US has said they would deport people from any country to Guantanamo and not give notice to the home country, including the UK and other "allies." How can you not pull out?
I’m wondering about the effect on ticket sales though, that would seem to be the one thing that makes them move it. I don’t care if I’ve saved for years to see the World Cup or the Olympics, I wouldn’t travel to the US and risk it
The IOC should contemplate the possibility of some athletes ending up in ICE detention over "misunderstandings" that coincidentally happen to give US athletes an advantage.
Plus there's so little time to move the Olympics now, you'd need to return somewhere that's already had them. Paris was largely temp, Tokyo hated it, Rio and Athens stadiums are in disrepair, Beijing has repurposed most of theirs, Sydney won't since 2032 is in Brisbane. It'd have to be London.
I think FIFA is in for a very rude awakening, justified imo, when they get to the games in "Dallas". Oh, we're gonna have the media center in downtown Dallas, the Fan Expo in Fair Park, and the games 20 miles away in another city, w/ NO public transportation.....also Texas in July. Enjoy....
Because the US would immediately boycott any response, it’s simply not happening barring a catastrophic failure in geopolitics…which at that point you’re not even thinking about putting on the games.
I think the thing is that the average person has zero idea how eye wateringly corrupt both those entities are, and how much money and planning is involved in those events.
I'd love for you to be correct, but the last 20-30 years have been pretty solidly "IOC got their money to award the games to X location and do not care after that"
That's the fun part - The IOC has already been paid by the big sponsors, plus a huge payout by the host city. They really don't care who does or doesn't show up on the day.
You got any reading material about this? I don't know what event the IOC would even be involved with in 2015. They suspended the Kuwait Olympic Committee in October '15, but that's not even in the ballpark of what we're talking about here.
Off the top of my head, I'm thinking of the delegations from the countries subject to travel bans, plus China, much of Latin America, and the refugee team are especially vulnerable but maybe even Canada?
I mean there is a legit discussion that every team playing the US will have about how the home team can use deportations and detentions to gain competitive advantage and should be expected to

Especially if those athletes dare to be brown while also performing better than white Americans
give it to a free country
but there are going to be boycotts for sure, especially by the time we hit 2028 - should be full on international pariah status by then
I wouldn't put it past... us.
FIFA not going to budge. They will convince themselves they don’t need tourists because US is so large.
IOC could find a backbone but it sounds ridiculous even saying it.
Getting banned from the world cup one tournament after hosting it
