I'm trying to draft a response to that paper (& practice what I preach about collaborative scholarly critique in the right forums!) But its core thesis is the opposite of my view on bias/impartiality. Positionality statements aren’t just "subjective declarations", they're part of a reflexive process

That was my take too. The paper came across as very thoughtful, but I thought it misrepresented what positionality statements are (or can be). It's not "these are my identities, which means I see things from this (less ignorant) perspective" — it's "this is my lens (as I understand it)."

It's not about stating "from *where* do I speak" but about describing what it's like for me when I look out at the world, in general, to help others understand how they might see what I'm describing, in particular, from their perspective.

It's the same reason we want to explicitly state our assumptions in quantitative research.

I’ve spent years trying to explain that noting bias or conflict of interest isn’t inherently BAD, but folks hear the word or phrase and think the worst. …oddly similar to content warnings, actually. 🤔
