Word on the street is that the next big thing in publishing is garish, avant garde science fantasy about anguished souls living in weird cities built on the bones of fallen civilizations they could never hope to understand

I think the thing about "avante gaurde" is that it is cyclical and returns regularly, especially with speculative fiction.
