Based on the photo you posted down the line, he wasn’t hit with a less lethal round. Those, which vary by purpose, have sponge foam tips for direct impact (baton) rounds or crushable foam tips for things like pepper or CS powder. Whatever he was hit with isn’t meant to be used that way.
Something like a signalling munition isnt made the same way and notable warnings include “Do not fire directly at personnel, as serious injury or death may
result”.
Photographer @jwhendricks.bsky.social shot by LASD near Compton on Sat.: "I was in the street maybe a hundred or so feet from the skirmish line, didn’t seem like they were firing at the moment. Then it felt like a high-speed rock hit my leg. I was wearing a vest that said in gigantic letters PRESS."
The @ktla.com journalist hit on Friday is Ken Koller, who was filming in downtown LA. In good spirits: "Well this is a first. Waiting to be seen at the urgent care, 'how did you get hurt?' Points to tv in the waiting room showing Ch5, 'like that' as they show me getting hit by the flash bang on tv."
Like in past, journalists are occasionally (though less often) targeted by protesters. Video of protesters chasing away @foxla.bsky.social crew from Friday. When police ask press to wear bright identifying clothing, this is why they can't. It's not OK to do this.
More photos of the terrible injury to photojournalist Nick Stern after being shot on Saturday by LASD. He's currently in surgery to remove shrapnel from these "less lethal" rounds. Photos by Manuel Miramontes, who also posted video on his Instagram account: https://www.instagram.com/p/DKpUAyexv_C/?hl=en
LAPD unlawfully issuing orders to press today ("MEDIA GO!"). California Penal Code 409.7 explicitly exempts journalists from dispersal orders. LAPD knows this and command staff has been trained on it.

FWIW: Don't confuse local Fox station employees for cable pundits.
We must support press rights for ALL press. I disagree with many I advocate for, but I support their rights.
