So, the serious response here is that American education is radically decentralized, and so the quality varies *enormously* between states and school districts.

Schools in Massachusetts and Connecticut compare favorably to anything in Germany or Denmark. Oklahoma or Mississippi... not so much.

Compounding the issue is that weaker schools, when struggling to pass state exams, tend to hyperfocus on math and literacy (reasonable, tbf) and strip other subjects for parts -- so history and art in particular tend to get underfunded, and have less qualified staff, at a struggling school.
