Quick comment on Trump‘s visa action and its effects on US higher education and research: Trump has paused visa interviews and is ‚aggressively revoking‘ visas of Chinese students. The damage to the US is enormous and hard to undo. Why? /1

The US has a proud tradition of excellence in research and teaching. Its universities attract the best students from all over the world. Despite a ridiculous price tag: nyu undergrad tuition for 1 year is 65000. just. Tuition. /2
And for all future students: is that a risk worth taking? Even if the next POTUS is a democrat, will maga return? Will you risk your family‘s savings for a lottery?
Or will you apply to Oxford instead of Harvard, Science Po instead of Stanford, Cambridge instead of Yale, Vienna instead of Columbia? And if the future leaders, the smartest of the smart are not at NYU, why pay 65000?
Would it be worth American universities opening ‘branches’ in Canada? You can almost imagine all American history and politics studies being moved abroad to avoid censorship.
