I work in pharma and there has been a distinct drop in late stage trials coming to the UK. Adds regulatory complexity and cost. EMA remains very important, possibly increasingly so as FDA stumbles, but UK chose to leave. Big mistake.

-Trial involvement generates funding.
-That funding employs researchers, those researches obtain skills and knowledge. Those people the become intellectual property of our hospitals, universities, pharmaceutical companies.
-That then feeds into our own innovations, companies, health service.

-Hospital or specific services tend to have better outcomes if they are heavily involved in clinical trials. It stimulates those systems to be at the top of their game

Because taking part in the trials gives earlier access, sometimes to medicines that the NHS might not later be able to afford. Participation ion trials is a standard 2nd or 3rd line treatment strategy in cancer. The nationality is important because trials are conducted under national 1/2

Taking part in trials only gives a small handful of people access - with potentially bad side effects. Stop pretending ‘trials’ means access for all as it clearly doesn’t. You are trying to pretend trials = access for all.

regulations and having to negotiate with several regulators, EMA and MHRA, for example, is costly and leads to complications when they do not align. Finally, conducting trials brings important revenue into the NHS and helps careers of the doctors or scientists who take part and get on the papers 2/2

Why not just wait until the results are known as that costs zero, has zero side effects and won’t actually affect the regulators decision, other than through NICE and they don’t need to take part in trials - just to understand the cost/benefit analysis.

Because taking part in the trials may benefit the patients, bring money into the NHS, bring money into the economy for the services like labs used to support trials, may enhance careers of investigators, thereby bringing more trials, encourage pharma companies to set up in the UK and much more.
