I mean given that the general retcon on post-Nicene ecumenical councils has mostly been ‘oops big misunderstanding’ I am not sure even the Orthodox are still held by any anathemas proclaimed in these councils.

Yes. Some of his ideas were a bit suspect but others had solid Scriptural basis. He was just too controversial and therefore they wanted to condemn him altogether.

This article by Richard Bauckham is a pretty good summary of its history as a doctrine. I’ll confess to being convinced that apokatastasis is simply the gospel proclaimed in an eschatological key. *Ducks and runs for cover.*

For me, it’s grounded in the doctrine of creation: why did God create? What God wills into being, God will not will out of being, etc.
