I reckon that's the problem - "smells of cat pee" is a generic catch-all for any strong-smelling plant that a person doesn't like, even when the smells described don't resemble each other! Conium, Sambucus, Impatiens, Ribes (yours!), and many more. It'd be interesting to compile a list of them!

I can only speak of my Ribes - they smell of cat-pee all day long! I'll give me Buxus a good sniff in the morning.

Box Hill in Surrey positively reeks, allegedly, although the locals are very posh. They talk about 'a slight bouquet of Ribes', I've been told.

It’s not a “generic catch-all” in the case of Buxus. Both cat pee and Buxus have the same aroma chemical. It is possible that box cultivars might vary in scent–some may produce more of the stuff than others.

Do you have a cat? When I gave away Salvia Hot Lips cuttings at work most people agreed with me that the leaves smelt of blackcurrant - except for the cat owners. Some people avoid Sauvignon Blanc wines for the same aromas. Or it may be like asparagus and coriander, some smell it differently.
