I'm not even sure the 1st time I saw Sabu was. I got into WCW shortly after the beginning of Nitro, and he lasted less than a month there before being fired, so it wasn't there. I saw him i believe on ecw tv at 2am on msg in 95 before his wcw run and was happy he was in ecw. When he went back to ecw and pillman going there and hogan red and yellow running around (after Austin already had his quick run) made me want to watch ecw. Sabu was a car wreck and I had to see it.

93-94 apter mag photos did wonders for his reputation, once I saw him wrestle the first time it was probably that nitro, then tape trading in 98. The magazines really did more for some of the non WWF/WCW talent than the TV did for WWF/WCW talent.

I think it was the WCW run for me. That was a weird time, as Sabu would come in for a cup of coffee then Public Enemy would show up a couple months later (and actually stuck around for a couple years, surprisingly enough).

The first wrestling tape I ever paid for was the Sabu vs Lightning Kid from Minnesota in 1993. I had to see that match as the Sabu hype was so big at the time and I loved Kid from Global on ESPN.

seen shows in Japan or the wild west indies of the mid 90s where people would be disappointed he didn't go thru a table in a match, so he would do it afterwards (!), I suppose just to build his mystique that much more. Say what you will about him as a performer, but building him vs. Taz for so long

in ECW and making it a focal point (but strangely not the main event) of their first PPV was INCREDIBLY important for the company. His aura was unmatched and that act of restraint, keeping Taz and Sabu apart for over a year 100% sold shows for them. I can't say I'm stunned that he's gone;

despite the marketing hype, he was human, after all and he took a ridiculous amount of damage. I mean, he took one of the stupidest, most dangerous bumps I've ever seen... AND THAT WAS THREE WEEKS AGO. Just one of those kind of men who you can't picture doing anything else but being in pro wrestling
