The assassination of of MLK Jr., and the persecution of Black people more generally, all while ~30% of U.S. ground troops in Vietnam were Black, is what caused those riots in 1968.

By 1969, I had 3 uncles serving in Southeast Asia, 2 in Vietnam, and 1 with U.S. Special Forces in Laos.

Not unlike black veterans of WWII, who were supposed to return from fighting fascism in Europe and just accept Jim Crow in the U.S., without making too much of a fuss.🙄

Of course he pandered to "law and order" just as Hitler did. But his lead was evaporating and he was on the verge of losing. His little side deal with South Viet Nam certainly didn't hurt, and his victory had far more to do with that disastrous war and inflation (guns and butter) than with riots.
