On an academic support group I’m in, visa system is hostile & expensive (universities spending circa half £million just on visas for research staff). Perception of foreign academics is that UK is hostile to them and v right-wing so go elsewhere- large numbers of vacancies for specialist researchers
I haven’t picked up on research itself becoming more problematic as a whole, though we do have weird spots of scientific transphobia which gets a lot of media coverage for very bad science. Perception of queer academics is that UK is V hostile, akin to US.
The immigration system is hostile, even the top-end visas are expensive and annoying. Funding is a bit unclear because our relationship with the EU is still messed up and the US just pulled out of a bunch of collabs. We’re an unattractive prospect with a nasty admin hurdle.
