Republicans aren't throwing out their principles to support Trump, those principles were never real. They were cudgels.
The core of Right Wing ideology is that there is a natural hierarchy of power. There are those who deserve everything and those who need to be penned in by laws and oppression.

"Conservative ideology depend on one thing: There are ingroups whom the law protects but does not bind, and outgroups whom the law binds but does not protect."
Or something similar to it.

Yet, I don’t think right wing politics has a monopoly on that line of thinking. We live in a global culture that functions through domination.
We don’t need new management, we need changed minds.
The hour is late.
This old definition of conservatism continues to hold.
Daily, the Never Trump neocons at the Lincoln Project and bulwark advocate for the constitution Dems n GOP swore an oath to defend.
Impeachment/removal is the remedy; Dem leaders said it’s off table.
-Wilhoit's Law
They belong to a class that can do anything, take any bribe, commit any crime, engage in any behavior, but they see the rest of us as dangerous and defective and needing controlled.
And because they're evil fuckers they want to get away with it and keep others from taking their stuff. So it's not actually contradictory at all.
"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."
Them? They can do whatever they want. Because they're above those things.
This explanation of the GOP’s shameless hypocrisy applies to much of this thread https://bsky.app/profile/brahn.bsky.social/post/3lmb7v7rmx223
