noticing in recent years that a lot of people seem to think of places they don't live as a sort of flat meme, unsure if this is a new phenomenon or it's just how its always been

like when people say a city is just tech bros - this is always false! those people are always a small portion of a population. but people will repeat it over and over about the bay area, austin etc. a flattening of depth
every city on earth is actually so much more than whatever you hear online about it about frankly even a modicum of curiosity & travel should cure you of this thinking
I've been in my current city for a decade and I'm only now feeling a sense of mutual ownership/belonging and I can do a good job showing someone around besides the main attractions and to think that other people can summarize other cities or whole states in a quippy meme always shocks me
i dont think its new thing for sure, locational stereotyping has always been around. and while i think a lot of it online is with vague senses of non-seriousness to it all, i do think it can prevade into some serious perceptions (usually incorrect ones).
