Thanks for this - I've been vehemently against this from the beginning as I can see abuses of the law occurring (albeit in a very small number of cases), but if it leads to better palliative care which in turn will mean fewer patients wanting to end their life, so much the better.

Our biggest mistake was the removal of dying from the family and community setting. Who knows the psychological harm this is doing to western societies?

I like reassuring words, but I am afraid the data on the impact on palliative care is, at best, controversial, at worst, far from reassuring. There is no systematic review yet that I can see, but I shall post the contradictory and the worrying link.

Yes- reassuring Dan, TY. Stepping back, I'm confident this level of thoughtfulness you describe is routinely possible. I dont doubt NHS colleagues are intrinsically decent & caring. My concern is how to retain this thoughtfulness when in a pressure cooker. How to ensure 'stepping back' is possible?

It’s hard. The evidence from elsewhere suggests disinvestment in palliative care. Where there is so little already, we as a profession need to stand up and say we won’t tolerate that.
