Worth remembering: Though Medicare is the primary health insurance provider for senior adults, it’s Medicaid that pays for nursing home coverage and other long-term care.

Seniors must first spend down most of their funds to qualify for Medicaid. Spouse is allowed to stay in the home and keep a car. Then a lean is placed on the home. After spouse passes the state take the house to recover funds. It is not just a handout.
We need to consolidate into Medicare. This is the problem with healthcare in the US. We are buried in bureaucracy with different programs for different services. Depending on whether you are a veteran, child, low income, middle income or a senior there are different programs for each.
Like other federal employees, the federal government (i.e., taxpayers) pays about 72–75% of the premiums.
Members of Congress pay the rest out of pocket, similar to many employer-sponsored plans in the private sector.
It’s not free, it is heavily subsidized and better than what Americans receive.

Thank you for posting! I have been screaming about this. Smug people think, “It won’t affect MY mom, she isn’t on Medicaid.” Well, better get that guest room ready, because Medicaid is keeping Mom’s nursing home open, not the residents with private insurance or big nest eggs.
They won’t have to keep the guest room ready for long. Many of these cuts will shut down rural hospitals thus making urban hospital wait times skyrocket. Children’s hospitals will also be on the chopping block
I’m so very exhausted with republicans wrecking everything in this country, terrorizing people and supporting a criminal squatting in the White House. Defacing the White House…
So many people are grossly unaware of the tremendous linkage between Medicade and nursing homes. And it isn’t just for poor people. Families at all income levels structure their estates and/or deplete their assets to eventually qualify for Medicaid.
Many mentally ill seniors living in nursing homes depend on Medicaid for giving them stability and quality of life. If Medicaid is cut, where will live? How will they be fed, bathed, receive their meds? Who will take care of them? Homelessness is not an option for this population.
A 65 y/o person has an almost 70% chance of spending some time in a nursing home or rehab facility. Medicare only covers a short time if you meet skilled criteria. It never covers long term care. It doesn’t take long to burn through your savings. Elections have consequences
Damn @waternymph38.bsky.social , I felt this in my soul. I have some serious health issues. I get really scared about these cuts to Medicaid which also trigger Medicare cuts, and lately, about war. If I can't access a hospital because a strike, I am doomed.
The last time I checked in Alabama, a nursing home cost around $6000 a month. I know it is much higher now. Since most seniors can't pay this, they have to qualify for Medicaid, which is very hard. If approved, they turn all their money and assets over to the nursing home. It's a racket for sure.
Many can be at home with family, with the guidance of medical professionals if they have the financial resources available. I say this from experience. Providing interaction, food, medication, bathing, and toileting is the only care most need on a daily basis.
"Older adults must meet state-specific income and asset thresholds to qualify for that care, which often requires them to spend down most, if not all, of their money, leaving them without a cushion or a backup plan."
For profit nursing homes don't take medicaid patients. We almost had to send my dad a Ross the state when the county sold the nursing home to private company. Luckily they decided the Medicaid patients could stay. He passed less than a year after they took over.
It is hard to find a bed when a patient is on Medicaid but I know that in my area Medicaid patients are in local nursing homes. Of course, I’m sure this will vary state to state and depend on bed availability.
We all witnessed the callousness of Trump in his first term as he downplayed Covid when the majority of deaths were elderly. Yet, he was voted in for a second term not in spite of it, but because of it. He encourages the gullible to embrace their worst selves and the rest of us pay dearly for it.
Politically, old people have the same utility and value as a spent tube of toothpaste. It's of no consequence that they are responsible for decades of dental health, they used to be profit centers but are now cost centers. How far are we from Soylent Green? https://youtu.be/N_jGOKYHxaQ?t=3
Yes and Medicaid won’t kick in til you spend every cent of your assets. Look back is 3 years so can’t give it to ur kids and then apply for Medicaid. My point is that all those seniors who r now dependent on Medicaid for care will also all be completely impoverished. Pro life stuff.
Let’s just start bringing everybody that’s homeless that can’t afford to eat. That’s been thrown out of their care facilities and place them on the White House steps along with all the girls that can’t have an abortion in the babies that can’t be fed
They will kick out the elderly into the streets.. they made the decision to starve children & so this is nothing to GOPs….
They all need to resign they do not work for us
What the hell do they expect old, infirmed people to do? Go live on the street? Good God! What is the matter with these people? All you dopes who voted for him. Do you honestly think you are never going to get old? I'm 83. Believe me. It happens! #YouWillGetOld
Not only will people die from this, but families will be torn apart if these dear old people go home to live with family members who are ill-equipped to care for them.
If they do that, it’ll confirm what they really want: to cull the herd. The optics alone will be something we’ve not seen in modern times. Our streets will be lined with elderly suffering w/dementia along with the unhoused. And all for what? Tax breaks for the wealthy!
Medicare pays for 30 days in a skilled nursing facility after each 3 day hospital stay. Out of pocket after that until you are out of money. Medicaid after that.
It will totally upend low income seniors before you get to that stage. Most of us can't afford healthcare without the 20% that medicaid provides. Take that away and you have, effectively, taken away Medicare... you can't USE IT if you can't afford the 20%!!
It will also impact those with resources to pay because the nursing homes will have to recover more uncompensated costs from paying customers. And your LTC insurance? LOL.
The impact of reducing Medicaid budgets for an aging population is tragic for the elderly and their children. Save a bedroom for mom and dad everybody.
And it’s not just those who rely upon Medicaid. If your parents are in a home where a portion of their income comes from Medicaid you and your parents will have to kick in more. And they won’t have any workers because they are deporting them all. They will simply close the doors. Spare bedroom?
Like the rest of American healthcare, long term care in a nursing home will become a luxury only for the affluent. Medicaid-dependent nursing homes will simply close. People like me, low income seniors, will die sooner, in our homes, as the government desires.
And I am just learning this now because my dad is going to need long term care but does not qualify for Medicaid, but can't afford to pay out of pocket! I am overwhelmed.
I went through that with my mom when I had to place her in long term care.
My mom didn't qualify for Medicaid, so we had to pay out of pocket it was crazy expensive😮
Try to find an elder lawyer to help you with saving like your dad's house
I have no money for a lawyer and my dad's income is only $2300 a month. His home is a reverse mortgage, so it has no value but is considered an asset. It's so stupid.
Many many many American seniors need full time care and can’t afford it- either at home or in a facility . Medicaid is the ONLY PROGRAM that keeps these individuals alive. Many seniors simple have run out of resources/cash etc and own nothing valuable enough to sell - nursing care is expensive.
The majority of nursing/care facilities in the US depend financially on Medicaid reimbursements.
Without Medicaid funding all nursing homes/ care facilities will shut down. First to close will be in rural communities in the mid-western states Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, Nebraska, Kansa
No they don't care, until they're taking care of mother in their house around the clock. A lot of these people don't truly understand the systems that they use, or what it takes to be a caregiver. Some hard lessons are about to be learned.
My 85-year-old mom took a "competency" test at her PCP office yesterday. The results supposedly affected whether she'd remain on Medicaid, even though she's already on Medicare. Is this like the old competency tests used during the Jim Crow era to deny people their right to vote?
And our tax Dollars pay for the idiots that are destroying our country. These creeps continue to get free care, while trying to eliminate our entitled benefits. In two weeks?
“… Republicans may be looking to cut billions of dollars from Medicaid funding to cover an extension of President Donald Trump’s 2017 tax breaks. Though Medicare is the primary health insurance provider for senior adults, it’s Medicaid that pays for nursing home coverage and other long-term care.”

This is a last ditch support not a benefit when you need it most, it sucks and we should socialize health care and bring dignity back to eldercare
I know this from personal experience with my Mom.
"Older adults must meet state-specific income and asset thresholds to qualify for that care, which often requires them to spend down most, if not all, of their money, leaving them without a cushion or a backup plan."
I don't know exactly how it works, but I've worked in places that had some wealthy families. This is how they get around certain rules 🥲
CALL & complain to your Senate offices
__🛑 STOP 🛑 this horrible budget bill
__don't sell public land
__ask your senators to EXPELL Mike Lee
