I think Biden was pretty clearly contending for top 3-4 President ever and then made a series of legacy defining fuck ups in the last 2 years of his term. You can also blame a lot of his failure on messaging but President is a public facing position and they lost the media war. They barely fought it

It's a bit more complicated than that. Biden won office with a relatively low-visibility campaign that helped minimize the effectiveness of Republican attacks. In office, he was similarly low-key, which helped avoid confrontations and enabled him to work deals, but it hurt him politically.

I mean I think they still probably win if he stepped down in time and they had an actual primary. The idea that he was too old to serve did not creep up on them. Much of it was a right wing disinformation campaign but there was a reason people talked about him like a likely one term guy back in 2020

I think a primary would’ve only exacerbated ongoing tensions within the Democratic Party, especially regarding Gaza. Plus, it seems really clear that low propensity voters were Trump only voters. You can’t manufacture an Obama, it’s either there or not.
