A fun little rabbithole: 'ngutu' = 'lip' / 'beak', so you'd think 'parore' might be 'turned', but it's not—at least not in modern Māori (instead, it's a 🐟). But the Marquesan verb 'parore' means 'to turn'. I guess when early Māori named the bird they still spoke the language of the Marquesan islands

It's likely an adaptation for foraging for invertebrates in their favoured habitat of braided river beds, but it's not known for sure.
