It is explicitly no longer about “self-defense”. Some people, in their view, just deserve death.
One wonders, did those people always harbor genocidal plans against Palestinians (Arabs? Muslims?) and now express them in the open, or were they transformed by October 7th? (A mix, probably).

Right. I try to persuade my political friends to see that defeating Israel and Zionism is really key to grounding American governance in respect of human rights. We can't make an exception for Isreal. it can't be a country we arm that claims "victory" is a genocide. It will destroy us to do that.

But this can’t be accepted as the method for judging genocide. Every genocidaire has claimed some grievance, real or invented, against the people he destroys. If we start crediting these explanations, we will essentially legalize genocide as a legitimate tool of state power.

Republicans are moving from "it's bad if Joe Biden does a genocide but ok if trump does it".

Some other republicans have a very consistent policy of "If Democrats do it, it's bad, if Republicans do it, it's good" that they apply to everything, not just genocide.
