IMO I would say Trump's false claims are the result of several factors - a disinterest and inattention to detail, a tendency to exaggerate or simply lie to defend his position, and a lack of mental acuity to understand more nuanced situations and statistics. He needs better advisers around him.

So…I’ve had the misfortune of following Trump closely since 2015. It’s typical to try to decipher him through the lens of normal human behavior. From my long-term observations, this is what happens:

(1) he creates a narrative that represents a “reality” he likes. He combines small truths, large lies, and unrelenting derision to spin the tale. He TESTS then repeats. Advisors DO tell him it’s wrong; he ignores them or gets rid of them (like cabinet members from his 1st administration)

(2) once tested, he repeats his “reality” until others repeat it. Congressmen, Fox News, podcasters, influencers, general grifters - they all repeat & amplify. His base then embraces the narrative as “their truth”, rallies behind it. Journalists or opposition arguing contrary facts are attacked.

We each have our own takes on these things. I suppose part of my perspective was gained from a few corporate acquisition meetings where I was expected to provide my fact-based opinion if asked. Usually, the other party did not like what I had to say. Facts are kryptonite for some negotiators.

Completely fictional tariff—The over 200% tariffs on U.S. dairy products are only triggered if U.S. dairy exports exceed certain yearly duty-free limits, and U.S. dairy manufacturers say they have never been close to exceeding these limits.
