That's a great photo.. I usually see them at least once a year. They are a big bird but they hide so well.. hear their calls almost every day in off winter months.
In a way, this image represents what my team and I aim to do in molecular scale electron microscopy. Show the dynamics of life in high resolution. Thank you for sharing this! I would be happy to see more photos like this.
To me its crazy that there is animals that are designed like this. Imagine if some humans came with an axehand or something, and was meant for cutting down trees
Awesome! I used to have pileated woodpeckers in the woods behind me. Occasionally they would come into my yard. They are extremely shy. But I have not seen any in years. So I don't know if there are still there or not
It's very difficult to take photos like this. Woodpeckers have hard beaks, and that's the only tool they have to heal the trees and find food for themselves.
I really like this one.
Very nice action shot.
Could you take a pic of the woodpecker who hammers on my neighbors' chimney cover? I need some sort of ID so I can make a noise report.
There was a dying tree in my next door neighbors yard that attracted woodpeckers even made a home. The neighbor cut down the tree despite my plea to leave it alone. Called him a fu**ing idiot. Now he won’t even talk I’m so not hurt.
It requires constant hard physical work every day to find food and survive, like many people do now, and I will not be such a person, it is not good for the body and can not earn more
I once read that the human brain is floating suspended in cerebrospinal fluid. It weighs about 1400–1500 grams, but its net weight suspended in CSF is equivalent to a mass of 25–50 g. It stated that our brains would receive a concussion when stepping down off a 6" curb if it wasn't floating in CSF.

Nice action shot!
I here we have them in Wisconsin.
Pileated is pronounced
PIE-lated,
Not
Pill-e-a-ted
You’re welcome
They do a thing with their tongue.
I really like this one.
