I worked for a government contractor that was produciing a prototype artificial “sniffer”. It cost several million dollars and didn’t work any where close to as well as a dog and the project was scrapped. A dog is cheap and incrediblly reliable.

From USDA's web site: All those probationary people let go will be returned by March 12 with full back pay. This is due to a court order holding a 45 day mandatory return.

At the end, the court will review, likely, in compliance w law, make it permanent.
