For so long I have resisted engaging in the tired "Labour just need a vision" thing. Yes. I know. But this has got to be the clearest illustration of the MIA vision. What do you stand for if you'll use money you don't have on pensioners who don't need it over, for example, reducing child poverty?

Some thoughts on Labour’s winter fuel payment U-Turn: the manner and timing of it has annoyed many MPs, it undermines Rachel Reeves’ credibility, it is an eccentric use of the government’s limited fiscal firepower. Other than that, it’s a great idea!

If so, that debate will get lost in detail and the point that overall pensions are rising will go unheard.
And really, why not? Everyone has access to the NHS and benefits: why shouldn't everyone contribute equally?
* I'd exempt care costs though, which are ruinously high.
Completely agree
The logic was
2 million very poor
2 million poor
8 million okay or well off
So let’s take the money off 10 million
stupid
Oh and do it as energy bills rise and at the last minute just before winter
Even more idiotic
But what is underestimated is the sheer logistical and practical value of clarity of vision: it helps you a) make decisions quickly and b) justify them effectively. Something Labour evidently struggles with!
Clarity of purpose - underrated.
