This discovery made me wonder if we have been restoring the rictus wrong in theropods. From what I understand, in lizards, muscles attach to the rictal plate, and the mucosal covering that gives it its distinctive look on most lizards is not found in extant archosaurs and turtles.

How much exoparia covers and what would depend heavily on the thickness and nature of the exoparia no? My understanding is that it's relatively then sheet off tissue.

how extensive it as and the subsequent covering possibilities depends on whether you interpret it as a ligament or muscle, this guide doesnt really touch on the details of that and is a more general "this is what you should take into account regardless of your interpretation"

that hasnt been looked at so we have no clue, but if there was an exoparia in pterosaurs we'd expect to see similar osteologial correlates on their surrangulae and jugals, perhaps something someone should look in to!

agreed! the paper notes exoparia-like structures which we're still unsure of in both sides of crown group archosauria, so i wouldnt be surprised if pan-Archosauria had it ancestrally if all three structures turn out to be homologous
