Do Gen Z kids just show up each others' homes unannounced or is that not a thing anymore? When I was a kid there was no texting or cell phones so you'd just be eating lunch or whatever and suddenly a friend would be at your door, without warning. It was awful - ThreadSky

My Gen alpha child shows up at her friend down the streets door and I applaud her for it. We also have a land line though so I dunno. We are the outliers in this and a few other social norms.

Dunno. I lived in the country. It was a mile the nearest neighbor, and my friends all lived in town. One time, though, my family moved to town, and a former coworker ran into our house after everyone was in bed.

He locked himself in the bathroom and rdfused to come out, saying someone was trying to kill him. My dad eventually got him come out, and we started locking our doors before turning in. The man died within a year from a hit-and-run.

I think it mostly depended on what kind of neighborhood you lived in, but my suburban town was too spread out and most people didn't do it, except for maybe your next door neighbor.

Didn't you have regular phones? My friend who lived in the same building would ring my doorbell and ask if I could come out and play but the rest would always call first. Though most visits were pre-planned.

(And as teens we had cell phones.)

When I was a kid, there were no cell phones. We got on our bikes and rode to a buddy's house. We didn't use the family phone.

I've got round this by not telling most people where I live, living in a building with 3 doors (one with a lock, another with a code) before you reach the front door to my flat, and by not having a door bell at the entry to the building. You can't show up unannounced even if you wanted to lol

When I was a teenager we lived out in the middle of goddamn nowhere, and my best friend was the only neighbor that you could actually see from my house. We would sometimes call to see what the other was up to, but usually just showed up. If I was mowing the lawn he would materialize next to me.

I actively had plans with two friends, but we couldn’t get a hold of the third guy, so we just stopped by his house on the way out. Turns out it was his brother’s birthday & he forgot. We showed up as they were about eat, and he was straight up like “why are you guys, here you shouldn’t be here.”1/

He looked mortified. We were happy to leave but then his mom saw us and she’s a MOM mom so she insisted we stay and eat. I kept apologizing to him and he would barely look me in the eye. When we finally left we laughed about it for about a week.

Oh and fwiw, he’s still a good friend to this day, one of the best dudes you’ll meet, but this was 15 years ago and we’ve just come to realize in the years since that he’s probably a bit on the spectrum. Like not enough to notice day to day, but…well there are signs.

When we were kids and went to stay at my grandparents, a long row of kids would wait outside dining room window waiting for us to come out. It was a treat because we had few kids to play with where we lived.

I was a freshman in HS in '95, which I consider the real beginning of what we currently call "the internet". The 1.0, so to speak.

Anyway, my best friend would show up at my door because there was no other way at times. He even once pebbled my 2nd floor window, like a teen romcom, haha.

They definitely still do. And I hate it. 😅 We’ll be in the middle of dinner and their friends will ring the doorbell asking them to come out to play. They are in MS for context in a super kid-friendly neighborhood.

My parents showed up at a friend's house without calling ahead a couple of years ago and their teenage daughter called the police. She just couldn't possibly understand why people would walk up and ring their doorbell when they weren't expecting company.
