exactly! Addressing climate change has nothing to do with Earth's survival and everything to do with humanity's survival.
You cannot solve a problem until it's correctly defined. Climate is a result of a small number greedy people choosing personal wealth accummulation over the good of mankind.
Buddy this is not some fucking mystery of the universe you can wave your hands around over and say "nobody knows", it's a word with a very clear and uncontroversial definition
You are not on my level; you cannot use me for whatever idiotic point you are trying to make, and I have nothing to gain from interacting with you. Persist and I'll simply block you and be done with it.
100%. We have been the worst guests imaginable. Leaving our shitty garbage everywhere, poisoning the air and water, ravaging the forests. Pretty much destroying whatever we get our hands on. We deserve to be kicked out.
A friend of mine is a HS science teacher (and geophysicist by training). His students moan, "How will Earth survive?" He laughs and tells them "Earth will be fine, even better once this current infestation is gone."
Retired MS teacher here. Used to love to ask my students to prove this statement wrong: "Humans are parasites on planet Earth." (The only parents that ever complained about my grades and comments in response were the christians.π)
Thatβs right. It will, in all likelihood, continue to rotate on its axis while moving around the sun for eons after weβve made it too hostile for us & tons of other living beings to live (let alone thrive) on it.
Not really. The damage weβre leaving behind will be here long after weβre gone. 10C climate, AMOC collapse, arctic ice melt, sea level rise, logging, mining, toxic microplastics, millions of trashed cars, 500+ nuclear power plants ready to meltdown and poison the soil, air, and water.
Weill considering the planet only has about a billion years left of habitability before the sun expands and makes life on Earth impossible, I would say the amount of time it takes to process in the toxins and heat put into the atmosphere is pretty important.
I do understand your point.
The results of what we have set in motion are now playing out and will continue to, for a long time to come. Unless there is a collective will for a turn-around (which I cannot imagine), we are going over the cliff.
Humanity has de sensitized itself. It has taken the EARTH ,DIRTIET IT UP,TAKEN IT FOR GRANTED .GIVING NOTHING BACK. DISREPECTING THE GLOBE . Does humanity think that the EARTH won't retaliate?! It has had enough. Humanity is feeling it now..
The living world will endure. We humans cannot presume the same. We require wisdom. To bring it back into balance. We must stop working in straight lines, and work in a circular way as mother nature does. That way we can ensure our survival.
I agree with you, but we have lost touch with the natural world. We have abandoned the sensitivity that knows that we are inter-connected with Nature and all living things.
Generally the human race has at the moment. But there are people trying to reverse that. Regenerative farmers are one group. The people of Costa Rica used wisdom, and regenerated half their lost rain forest in only 25 years. It just needs will power. And educating people globally.
You are right, there are some dedicated people and communities scattered around the world, but it has to be ALL of us.
There are too many people attached to their comforts, and concerned only with increasing those comforts. We (most of us) live with far more than what we need.
No amount of education at this point will make any difference. The masses have no desire to change. And there are no leaders anymore, to guide us in a healthy direction.
We need to understand the relationship between us, the universe and the Creator Allah SWT!
We are not the owners of the earth and the skies but we are the trustees for life on earth and we have to deal with everything in the right way according to the will of the Creator Allah almighty!
I donβt understand my Christian fellow citizens who could care less about the environment. Even the Bible talks about being a steward of the lands. Another thing they skip
George Carlin: ' Maybe the earth needed humans. Maybe the earth needed a good coating of plastic. The earth is going to be just fine. One day it'll shake us off like a bad case of fleas'.
(paraphrased)
This is perfectly true. Planet Earth has existed for 4.54 billion years. 4540,000,000 years. Recognisable humans have existed for 300,000 years. So we have existed on the planet Earth 0.000006607%. So planet Earth has never needed humans.
The human species has an Ego problem of astrological size!!!
Absolutely - timescale below summarises evolution and mass extinctions over the last 4540 billion years. Human history is but a tiny blip.
Though I can't be alone in thinking that the asteroid that caused KβT extinction looks like a massive spliff.
I think sheβs gearing up to whoop our asses again with another devastating pandemic. Itβs tremendously unfortunate so many animals are dying of avian flu, first. π
Exactly! I've been saying this for decades. 99% of all species on Earth was made extinct NOT because of human intervention. People wanting to "save the planet" are having themselves on. Planet Earth will do fine. We might not be around, joining the 99%. But hey, the planet will continue just fine.
All other beings play an important role in sustaining life on Earth. But the self appointed "smart" ones, human beings, are destroying it, all the while calling other creatures dumb and lording over them as if humans are owed anything and everything.
Miss me with misanthropy. If we are the universe (that is to say nature) experiencing itself then weβre inextricable from one another. Separating us from our environment and installing an inhumane system that would do anything in the name of endless growth are the problems.
Do you all remember the 2008 film, "The Happening"? Basic premise- the earth is fed up with humanity and plants are taking over the planet by emitting allergens that compel suicide.
Great Marky Mark film.
Oh,yeah, and the thousands of species of all types we're "losing" by the day. But....in a billion years ,or so, Mother Earth should be restored to her beautiful perfect self!
Umm, no? The Earth only has about a billion years of habitability left before the sun expands and renders life on it impossible. Earth is pretty much at its wits end.
We are right in the start of the 6th Great Extinction! It doesnβt matter if you believe in climate change because climate change doesnβt give a fuck what you believe!
In βJurassic Parkβ Ian Malcolm paraphrase: we arenβt destroying earth, we are destroying ourselves. The earth will go on&be something else after we are gone.
I love NASA, think exploration in part of humanity, but shouldnβt we take care of the earth we inherited vs looking for earth 2?
Please send them sooner rather than later. Hey A.I. can I get a picture of an already teraformed Mars? "Look! Mars! Making planet earth better since 1950! She's all ready, fellas.
I was short on time.
I was thinking use misinformation against misinformants, what with such a fine line between reality and fallacy. How fun would it be to pull off the ultimate heist and take everything from those upon high?
We don't send sweet cheeks, they send themselves and they are heading to Mars, not the moon. The moon is done by NASA and does not send billionaires...
"The planet is fine. The people are fucked." I'm less worried about saving the planet as I am saving humanity from making the planet uninhabitable for us.
G-D made male and female and placed them upon the earth and everything on it. And said be fruitful and multiply. And the earth prospered till evil tyrants spread out like hotcakes to try and take over the earth and the people upon it. And make themselves out to be a G-D.
What if, the planet has identified humans as an infection. Could the increase in volcanic activity, wildfires, severe storms in every season around the world be Terra's immune system kicking in? Snicker @ tour own peril
πππ
Weβre the exact same as every other creature on Earth. All animals are potentially parasites. Thereβs nothing unique about what humans are doing. Human nature is nature.
We're the worst kind. The kind that was given a brain to discriminate right from wrong, that could choose, and create a more efficient, sustainable and harmonious world. And we continue to destroy.
Ecologists and Green campaigners keep forgetting that the Earth doesn't need us, does not need to be anthropomorphized and definitely does not need taking care of. It's WE that need taking care of, and that means maintaining the planet in a fit state to support life.
My point is the earth will still be here no matter the state but we wonβt! Perhaps when we are gone over time, the earth can evolve to something better.
I mean the geology of the rock will still physically be here. But not in the sense that any actual nature or biodiversity or complex life will live on it again.
Truth. But I HATE that we are taking down all of the beautiful diversity and innocent creatures with us. I absolutely hate it. It's all for greed. Excessive Conspicuous Consumption. It's disgusting.
Reminds me of an old George Carlin rant about how Mother Earth isnβt afraid of us. He said she would shake us off like fleas off a dog if we didnβt change our ways. When I think of all the fires, floods, quakes, tsunamis, and droughts, I think Mother Nature has about reached her limit with us! π³
She's so selfless and giving and full of love. I wish more people would give her human qualities so they could learn to deeply feel for her. I think a lot of people just see her as a thing that we live on and not the single source of life like she truly is.
The earth may not *need* us, but it has absolutely benefited historically from stewardship by human beings. Indigenous communities have always known this. What earth doesn't need is extraction/disaster capitalism, laying waste to everything in sight.
Wrong. Indigenous communities have been stewarding and protecting the planet for thousands of years. We need to end the systems that prevent them from doing that. Capitalism and colonialism and white supremacy have abused their residency, and they are what we have to evict.
That is a separate issue. We are from "here" but until those that abuse the earth realise that the earth does not actually need us to exist our continued residency will become more unlikely.
People will be gone and forgotten while "earth" will continue on it course in space till the "sun" goes nova. We have needs to survive, the "earth" does not need us to survive. It will heal after we are gone.
Indigenous peoples respected nature and preserved the lands by living simplistically. The immigrants from Europe came and raped the countries for the sake of greed, wealth and power.
Not really. The damage weβre leaving behind will be here long after weβre gone. 10C climate, AMOC collapse, arctic ice melt, sea level rise, logging, mining, toxic microplastics, millions of trashed cars, 500+ nuclear power plants ready to meltdown and poison the soil, air, and water.
in response to those that dream of going to Mars (one in particular)
God's instruction was for man to make Earth into Heaven
-we are woefully short of the mark
space travel at this time...?
will only take our "disease" to the heavens
As a once great scholar once said... "The planet'll shake us off like a bad case of fleas. The planet will be here for a long, long, LONG time after we're gone, and it will heal itself, it will cleanse itself, 'cause that's what it does. It's a self-correcting system." -GC
Basic truth. But not sufficient for capitalists mental profit maker. Has never led to a new Smart way.
It's like ecologists being idiots.
It shows limits of so called good business people for a country.
Everything a result of exploiting resources....not for the benefit of the planet.
Iβve been saying for a long time that we likely wonβt destroy the earth. The earth is more likely to one day shake us off like fleas. Our time here is an eye blink to the earth. We ought to try to prolong it for our own sakes.
If this isnβt obvious after the devastation from the LA fires, Hurricane Helene and countless other natural disasters then I donβt know how much more evidence humans need.

Is a consumer capitalist, because most business is based on demand?
What is a capitalist? I bet you are, but you just don't realize it.
Earth possess us and always had.
But Humanity is under the delusion that they do possess it.

Thanks for sharing.
Way back, Earth got hit by another whole actual planet, and survived. The Moon is the result.
What planet killers do, is to wipe out lots of species of life.
Humans are parasites confirmed
Whatever the planet's condition after we're gone, will be infinitely better because we are gone. Who cares how long it takes?

Great Marky Mark film.
Doesnβt actually need anything.
I love NASA, think exploration in part of humanity, but shouldnβt we take care of the earth we inherited vs looking for earth 2?
The dominant culture is always inferior. Never superior or sustainable.
I was thinking use misinformation against misinformants, what with such a fine line between reality and fallacy. How fun would it be to pull off the ultimate heist and take everything from those upon high?
The Earth is terraforming into a planet that cannot support human life, and we're pushing it towards that state.

Drop everything else.
Recycling, especially plastic, is pointless. It makes people think they're making a difference, which prevents them from taking any other action.
"Why are you bothering me? I recycle!"
Plastic can be buried safely.
Plastic contains carbon. Burying carbon in a pit in a stable form is called...
... carbon...
... CAPTURE!
It's not a climate crisis.
It's a human crisis.
We should be very clear about our own accountability, but also how the crisis affects us.

It may be a burned out cinder, but it'll still be here.
The question is not the survival of the earth.
The question is OUR ability to survive ON earth.
It's not Save the Earth.
It's Save Humanity on the Earth.
