There's a debate about if Lander getting arrested was a stunt? Of course it was a stunt, and it was a good one. He's got the race's best photo op, he raised awareness that they will arrest anyone without a warrant, and most importantly he put his body on the line to do good. Nothing wrong there.

Lander has been supporting immigrants for a long time. This is not the first time he’s shown up. The stunt is pulled by ICE to show they will not obey the law now that Trump has attacked NYC. It happened in LA, NJ, now they are going after NYC.

He’s taking advantage of attention and relative safety to expose the government cruelty and overreach—people see that even if you’re a mayoral candidate and have a state position and are protected by police, you aren’t safe from the current administration.

I think he put himself at the risk of arrest intentionally—he couldn’t predict the outcome, but he was willing to use the publicity focused on him to incur physical and legal risk because he can. It’s admirable.

I was reacting to someone justifying it as a stunt, which it is, because it was done in public in the middle of an election—he’s not a self-centered jerk by all accounts, so he was highlighting the unfairness of the system by showing what happens when even someone like him questions it.

This is what I call “burning your privilege”: he is using a position of power to either show that the authorities *will not* attack those with power or to show that *no matter how much power you have* they will attack you—but he has substantial resources to avoid most consequences.

I’m not sure why people are reading the above as criticism. He has attention. He’s doing the work. He put himself in a risky situation. It’s admirable. I don’t know if it will move the bubble on his chances of winning—but he is using the focus on him to help others.
